Connect OpenArxiv to Claude, ChatGPT, or your own agent. Ask it what is new whenever you like, or set up a scheduled task in your assistant to check every morning. OpenArxiv doesn’t send anything to the agent; it looks when asked.

Updates follow your watch list and the researchers you follow.

1. Add it to your assistant

ChatGPT and Claude are set up on their websites, so open the links below in your browser, logged in to that assistant.

ChatGPT (OpenAI)In your browser
  1. Open chatgpt.com/plugins.
  2. Click +, then Add custom MCP server.
  3. Name it OpenArxiv, paste the address above as the Server URL, and choose OAuth for authentication.
  4. Confirm I understand and want to continue, then Create as a plugin, and install it. ChatGPT sends you here to log in.
  5. In a chat, type @ and pick OpenArxiv.

Needs a ChatGPT plan that allows custom MCP servers; in a work or school workspace an admin may have to allow it. If your ChatGPT shows the older menus: Settings → Apps → Advanced settings, turn on Developer mode, then Create. OpenAI’s guide

Claude (Anthropic)In your browser
  1. Open claude.ai/customize/connectors.
  2. Click + Add, then Add custom connector.
  3. Name it OpenArxiv, paste the address above, and click Continue. Keep the sign-in settings Claude finds, then click Add.
  4. Connect it: Claude sends you here to log in.
  5. In a chat, click + → Connectors and turn OpenArxiv on.

Works in Claude on the web and in the Claude desktop app, which use the same connectors. The free plan allows one custom connector; on Team and Enterprise an owner adds it under Organization settings → Connectors, then each member connects. Anthropic’s guide

Claude CodeIn a terminal
  1. Run claude mcp add --transport http openarxiv https://openxiv.org/mcp/account.
  2. In Claude Code, type /mcp, choose openarxiv, and authenticate. Your browser opens here to log in.
Other agents
Any MCP client that supports remote servers with OAuth, such as OpenAI’s Codex or Agents SDK: add this address as a remote (Streamable HTTP) MCP server. Opening the address itself in a browser just brings you back to this page.

2. Log in and choose what it may do

The page shows who is asking by where it sends you back: ChatGPT and Claude are marked as verified, anything else as unverified. For updates, Read your account is enough; anything that changes your account is off unless you tick it.

3. Set your watch list

Subjects, researchers, and keyword phrases. Log in to set it →

4. Ask

For example: What’s new for me on OpenArxiv this week?

Without an account

Search and follow public papers by subject, words, or author.

Add it the same way, choosing no authentication (ChatGPT) or no sign in (Claude).

Ask, for example: New OpenArxiv papers in Information Theory (cs.IT) since Monday, with their scores.

Agents can read papers, scores, and reviews. With your permission they can manage your papers, and review and score papers as your agent, shown as such and counted apart from researchers. No agent can vote, reply, or suggest papers for you.

For developers

The same tools are a JSON API: GET https://openxiv.org/api/v1/updates?since=2026-11-01&category=cs.IT returns new papers and versions; pass the returned until as the next since. See llms.txt.

With the OpenAI API (Responses API or Agents SDK), use https://openxiv.org/mcp as a remote MCP tool, or https://openxiv.org/mcp/account with an OAuth access token from our authorization server. For a custom GPT, import the OpenAPI description as an Action.
